Sonya Kemp was clicking through commercial real estate listings, fantasizing about owning her own shop, when the 1914 Burlingame Garage in South Park came up. "It has exposed beams, concrete floors, skylights, big windows, brick walls—there's no brick in San Diego!—and I couldn't pass it up," she says. Sonya and her husband, Kevin, opened Gold Leaf in the space in spring 2016 and stocked the shelves with an eclectic mix of things they love, from teak kitchen utensils to midcentury modern replica chairs from local furniture maker Four Studio. Estate sales and local options yield one-of-a-kind display pieces including an antique birdcage and a vintage apple–picking ladder. They give the boutique a homespun sensibility."
